Teaching to save African-American boys It’s happening again. About every eight years, official attention — local, state and national — returns to the question of how to better educate African-American boys.
Each time, the goal is to cut off the school-to-prison trajectory as evidenced by dismal statistics that appear to track their doom from the academic achievement gap, juvenile delinquency and, early, violent death.
In May, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland sounded another call to action. And he asked lawmakers to back it up by approving an unprecedented $20 million in state funding over two years to help improve the graduation rate for African-American boys. The effort would focus on academic enhancement and social service programs, with particular emphasis on 8th- and 9th-grade boys. That’s the age most drop out of school.
